RIM – Reaction Injection Moulding

Reaction Injection Moulding  (RIM) is similar and often confused with injection molding except RIM uses thermosetting polymers, which requires a curing reaction to occur within the mold

RIM – Reaction Injection Moulding

The benefits of using RIM – Reaction Injection Moulding

  • Excellent mechanical properties mean that RIM moulding is an ideal solution where expensive injection moulding set up is prohibitive for the volumes required.
  • RIM – Reaction Injection Moulding will produce strong, flexible, lightweight parts which can easily be painted and finished.
  • It also has the advantage of quick cycle times compared to typical vacuum cast materials.
  • The bi-component mixture injected into the mould has a much lower viscosity than molten thermoplastic polymers, therefore large, light-weight, and thin-walled items can be produced successfully utilising the RIM process.

What is the difference between injection and reaction injection moulding?

In short, the two methods are very similar to one another. The main difference though is reaction injection moulding uses a thermosetting polymer in the injection process, which needs a curing reaction to take place inside of the mould in order to harden.
